Elmira, NY – Visions Federal Credit Union recently had the honor of presenting astronaut and Elmira-native Colonel Eileen Collins for an advanced screening of her documentary, SPACEWOMAN, at Elmira College. Visions was able to bring this special event to the community thanks to their partnership with Syracuse University’s Office of Veteran and Military Affairs (OVMA).
Collins holds an expansive track record of accomplishments in the fields of math, science, aviation, and – most prominently – spaceflight, being the first female astronaut to ever pilot and command a US space shuttle. The film is an adaptation of her memoir, Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars, which has inspired hundreds of thousands, and is coming soon to select theaters and streaming.
After the screening, fans of hers were treated to a Q+A, followed by a meet and greet where Collins could be seen signing personal mementos, taking pictures, and sharing heartfelt conversations. “I want to thank both Visions and Syracuse University for hosting, because for a lot of the people that came to see the movie, I think in one way or another they could relate to SPACEWOMAN. I think it really made an impact, and I’m going to remember that forever.”
Alongside her accomplishments in astronautics, Collins also dedicated many years of her life to service within the U.S. Air Force. Having served as a colonel, as well as both an instructor pilot and test pilot, Visions is grateful for the privilege of getting to celebrate a local veteran who has devoted so much of her time and strength to helping others within her direct community, as well as outside of it.
For Visions, it’s a matter of community-building, honoring veterans, and giving back. “This was perfectly timed with Women’s History Month,” said Emily Vail, Visions’ Events Coordinator, “and combined with our Veterans Program, it’s just part of what we do at Visions. We had a huge turnout, and you could tell people were really engaged and enjoying the movie.”
Theatrical release locations and ticketing information can be found through the official SPACEWOMAN website.
