Our radionovela, brought to you by Visions Federal Credit Union, mixes melodrama and comedy. It is a tribute to the genre, a celebration of the rich canon of telenovelas, its over-the top characters and its famously convoluted plot twists.
It doesn’t take itself too seriously, it is lighthearted and keeps the pace of narrative quick on its feet. Visions’ staff, products and services are embedded organically in the storyline with ease and plausibility for a touch of real-life financial lessons.
The premise of our story borrows from the classic French play Cyrano de Bergerac, but with a current twist: a driven and resourceful young man obtains advice from Visions employees to win the favor and feelings of an out-of-his-league girl. Naturally, Visions will help him in his entrepreneurial skills, too.
THE CHARACTERS
JUAN MIGUEL & PATRICIA
Juan Miguel (Juanmi): Resourceful, hardworking, but "unbanked." He works at a Latin restaurant delivering meals (and preparing them too). He dreams of a better life and of winning over Patricia. The problem: he’s quite intimidated by her, he feels she’s out of his league. His superpower: he’s a great cook and eventually he will find out that he can put to good use his abilities in the kitchen to win her heart. The old saying that “the quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach” is a two-way street.
Patricia: The "impossible" girl. Smart, about to graduate college, beautiful, driven, and confident. She adopts a businesslike, no-nonsense persona in public, but she’s a romantic at heart.
Sancocho: Juanmi’s puppy
RICARDO
Don Ricardo: The antagonist. A "cash-is-king" jaded type who hides money under mattresses and uses predatory lenders. He’s not mean or ill-willed, he’s just a curmudgeon. His outlook on life is always tinged with pessimism and bitterness.
MARISOL & FELIPE
Marisol & Felipe: Visions Federal Credit Union employees. The "Cyrano" figures who give Juanmi the tips, financial advice, and tools he needs to succeed.
