Reading, PA – Visions Federal Credit Union was presented with the First Place 2019 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award for its work in bringing financial literacy programs to the Reading, PA region.

Visions and a team of six local credit unions have introduced and hosted financial reality fairs in the area for the last four years, reaching thousands of high schoolers during that time. At these reality fairs, students are asked to pick a career of their choice, look up the average annual salary, and then participate in a simulated budgeting exercise with the help of financial professionals.

Students make a variety of budgetary choices, from anticipated rent costs to student loan payment projections. These costs are then subtracted from their monthly income, providing them with real-world expectations of their post-graduation lives.

More than 3,800 junior and senior high school students have participated in the program since its inception, with even more events and schools planned to participate in the coming year.

What is the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award?

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award is given to a credit union or chapter/multiple credit union group for its social responsibility projects within the community. The award is given for external activities.
